How to Meet Ceremonial Cacao | A Ritual for Softening & Presence

How We Meet Cacao: A Ritual of Return

Cacao is one of the world’s oldest plant elders; a being tended, honoured, and sung to across Mesoamerica for thousands of years. She is a companion for presence, clarity, and return; a gentle medicine that asks nothing but your attention, your breath, your willingness to slow.

And yet, when you prepare cacao, she is met.

She responds to relationship - to the hands that tend her, the land she grows from, the lineage that shaped her, and the presence you offer when you sit with her. This is what makes cacao “ceremonial”  reciprocity, devotion, craft and care.

This is why she opens differently for each person:
gently for some, deeply for others,
always in her own time.

How Cacao Moves Through Us

When you drink ceremonial cacao slowly; warm, unhurried, attentive - something begins to soften. Your breath deepens. The chest loosens. The mind quiets enough for you to hear the subtle places inside that have been asking for attention.

This is cacao’s way of moving. Steady, grounding, gently awakening.

Her natural compounds  theobromine, anandamide and flavonoids support emotional clarity, calm energy, and a quiet, steady alertness. But her essence lives beyond chemistry. She meets you through warmth, through presence, through the simple act of choosing to sit with yourself.

In this space - The Journal • Forest Notes, we’ll also trace how she moves across land:
through the mist-held mountains of northern Thailand, through Mesoamerican memory,
through every hand, every lineage, every forest that has tended her.

And as we walk with her, we may meet other threads too; the lineages that remember plant-beings as teachers, the currents held in Peru’s high mountains, the earth medicines tended by different cultures, each with their own way of listening to the living world.

To honour the ways these beings coexist,
how cacao stands among them,
how earth medicine is always relational,
and how these threads recognise one another
across continents, lands, and time.

This is a place to follow those subtle connections, to listen to how plants, lands, and memory speak through one another, and to meet cacao as a living current, not a commodity.

Where Floresta Cacao  Began

Floresta Cacao is crafted in the mountains north of Thailand, a region of waterfalls, hidden paths, morning mist, and the quiet hum of ancient trees.

She is grown and tended by a women-rooted Lisu family who steward their land with devotion, skill, and generational knowledge. Every batch is handcrafted, sun-dried, and stone-ground to protect her natural oils, memory, and subtle spirit.

This is cacao, grown through reciprocity, respect, and care.

Each block carries the grounded, feminine frequency of the northern forests: warm earth, stone-fruit brightness, soft florals, and a quiet, steady heart-opening.

She is a cacao of return. You can explore our offerings at Floresta Cacao

A Simple Ceremonial Cacao Ritual

A gentle way to sit with her and to soften the breath, open the chest, and return to yourself.

1. Warm the cacao slowly
Let her melt in water with patience.
Warmth, not heat, preserves her natural oils and presence.

2. Stir with intention
As she thickens, breathe once into the heart.
What do I need today?
Let the answer be quiet.

3. Pour into your cup
Feel the weight.
Cacao has always been shared slowly as nourishment, not urgency.

4. Sit and sip
Gentle sips.
Long exhales.
Let her move through the body in her own rhythm.

5. Listen
To the settling, the softening, the warmth rising.
Cacao is a gentle teacher; she opens gradually.

6. Close with gratitude
A hand on the heart, a breath toward the cup.
A small thank you to the plant, to the land and to yourself.

For Those Who Feel Called to Explore Further

Alongside Floresta Cacao, I tend another offering: Otto & Bear’s Letters; a gentle storytelling space for children and families.

Like cacao, it was born in the northern mountains,
inspired by mist, forest light, wild imagination, and slow rhythms of living.
Both offerings, plant and story are rooted in the same intention:
to bring people home to softness, presence, and connection.

If you feel called, you can wander to the Letters by visiting Otto & Bear's Letters
